If you have ever had difficulty changing something in your life, then this article is for you!

The maddening thing about resolutions is that they seem so logical and simple: I will set my alarm an hour early and go to the gym at 6am every day this week. And I’ll feel so good!

There is literally nothing stopping you from achieving your goal. Well, almost.

As you may have noticed, the roadblock to change is often emotional. The alarm rings at 5:30, you roll over, and the emotion is “uggh.” The primary hurdle is not waking up at 5:30, but rather that you don’t like what you planned better than the alternative! Change that feels like a chore is quietly subverted by a wise part of you that has more pleasant things to do, like sleeping an extra hour.

There are hundreds of tricks to co-opt emotion to support change. However, the real key to change lies in creating flow: a mental state in which you are fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of an activity*. More than simply creating healthy habits that make your day go more smoothly, flow is about change that excites and energizes you.

To understand flow, take a moment and recall a time when you were completely absorbed and feeling relaxed in an activity you enjoy. It could be anything from playing a video game, to painting, running, or shopping. In that moment, you were so engaged that action just flowed through you, effortlessly. When you are working toward goals that energize you, the meaningful action to bring about the changes you want for your life can flow just as effortlessly.

Does your resolution excite and energize you more than the alternative? Does waking up at 5:30 to go the gym excite you more than the alternative of sleeping in? Does quitting smoking excite you more than buying a cigarette when you are having a craving? If your goals feel burdensome, then it is likely time to shift them: change is about meaningful action—not struggle.

A powerful solution is life coaching. Anybody can generate goals and resolutions on their own, but a coach can help you land upon the right goals that will be so compelling that you never look back. Coaching combines exciting goals with ongoing support to make change surprisingly easy. Imagine how your life might be different if your resolutions inspired joy or excitement.
